Letter from our Secretary-General

Esteemed Prospective

On behalf of İSTEKMUN Family, it is an utmost privilege and pleasure to welcome you all to the first edition of İSTEK Model United Nations Conference. My name is Zeynep Öykü Kalkan and it is my honor to serve you as the Secretary-General. The first edition of İSTEKMUN will be held virtually with the collaboration of GO Academy and İSTEK Schools. With its 36-year history of shaping and educating modern, inquisitive, and enterprising generations in 22 educational institutions all around Turkey, İSTEK Schools are one of the biggest and most well-established educational foundations in Turkey.

The COVID-19 pandemic has become one of the biggest challenges our world had to face. For the past year, COVID-19 has affected and changed our lives in a number of ways. During this period, most of us felt isolated as our educational and social activities became online. With an eagerness and effort to connect you to fellow students and enable you to engage with the economic, social and political problems of our world, we decided to host the first edition of our conference online. In an endeavor to provide the full İSTEKMUN experience to our participants, our organization teams worked with great dedication to design our conference virtually and provide you the tools that will ensure you to have an experience as joyful and beneficial as you would have in a physical conference. On that note, I would like to thank our academic and organization teams for their hard work and dedication.

In our first edition we host five committees which focus on a wide range of topics that include several important aspects of empowerment and development. Delegates of the General Assembly Third Committee: Social, Cultural and Humanitarian Affairs Committee (SOCHUM) will focus on empowering conflict affected children and youth while the delegates of Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) will tackle securing and ensuring economic stability in the conflict or post-conflict nations. Delegates appointed to the United Nations Environmental Programme (UNEP) will focus on urgent actions necessary to combat climate change while delegates of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) will try to find ways to raise women’s empowerment on economy. Lastly, delegates appointed to the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) will discuss state capacity in response to natural disasters and crises. We are looking forward to hear your take and solutions on these crucial topics and wish you fruitful debates.

On behalf of İSTEKMUN Family, I thank you for choosing to contribute in our conference. We are looking forward to meet you as you are the future delegates. Your ideas and dreams will shape the future and it is because of you, because of our belief in you that we expect a better future. So, let us meet in İSTEKMUN this May to discuss what the presidents, ministers and government officials discuss and see if we can do things differently. Let us take part in shaping the world around us.
